What Is A Bunion?

Bunions (or Hallux Valgus) are an often painful condition characterised by the formation of a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe. The big toe will often push across into the next toe, creating a deformity in the appearance of the foot as well as plenty of pain. Bunions are often associated with the use of tight, narrow shoes, poor foot mechanics and even arthritis.

Treatment for bunions can involve a number of different aspects, depending on the stage and severity of the condition. Simple techniques such as taping or bracing can be beneficial, along with advice on which type of shoes are the most appropriate for you. Shoe inserts, or orthotics as they are correctly known, can be helpful, along with special padding for the toe. If bunions are allowed to progress, and the pain becomes severe, sometimes surgery is required to correct the deformity of the big toe.
